Skin Care Seasonal Variations

Each season has its unique weather condition and each one of them evokes different feelings and moods.  These are reactions toward the unique characteristics of each season. Fall is the beginning of a cooler and drier weather. As the leaves begin to change colors and wither away, the weather gets cooler with shorter days and longer nights. Winter surreptitiously creeps in. The weather becomes cold and dry. We see bare landscape with little signs of activity. Spring follows as we begin to discard our thick and warm clothing. Flowers blooms and there’s signs of a new beginning. Summer is the finale of fun and happiness. While Spring brings us the great outdoor, Summer leads us to fun-filled activities in a warm and humid environment. This seasonal climatic variation and our reactions towards it affect our skin in various ways. Our skin care regimen therefore has to change to counteract the harmful effects of each season. Ultimately, it is to restore and maintain our skin in its best condition.

Fall is characterized by low humidity and chilling wind. This dries the skin and reduces the moisture level, making the skin dry and parched. Moisturizing your skin should be your main focus. A long-lasting and effective moisturizer is recommended and the best choices are either cream or oil-based moisturizers. Lotions are not recommended as it is water-based and the effects are short-lived. To reduce moisture loss, use a milder cleanser and exfoliant. Exfoliation is still essential during Fall as it is a regeneration process for the skin. This process enables the skin to absorb other skin care products readily, achieving a refined skin texture. Even though the sun is not as treacherous, sun protection is still necessary to ward off any UV rays.

Fall is also a good time to assess the skin condition for damages sustained during the Summer and to repair or reverse the damages, preparing the skin for Winter. Such damages are caused by exposure to many harmful influences, such as pool chemicals, heat, sunburn, wind and air-conditioning.

Excessive sun exposure can damage your skin, so can cold and windy winter weather, especially if the skin is dry and sensitive. The winter weather and with the thermostat turns up will make your skin chapped, flaky, blotchy, dry and itchy. Just like Fall, focus should be on moisturizing the skin. Use richer moisturizer, lotion is not recommended, 2-3 times daily to adequately moisturize. Mild cleanser is recommended to prevent excessive stripping of your natural moisture. Gently exfoliate to remove dead skin due to dryness. Sun protection is still required as the sun is just as powerful.

Spring is a transformation period from cold winter to warm summer weather. As the warm weather creeps in, the skin becomes oilier. As this change takes place, you will need to gradually replace the heavier weight moisturizer to a lighter one. This is to prevent excessive moisturizing that may clog the pores. Cleanse twice daily is good to clear the skin of environmental residue. Regular exfoliation during spring is necessary to rid of any dead skin that may clog the pores. Again sun protection is necessary to protect the skin against sun damage.

Just like fall, Spring is the season to assess the condition of the skin. The cold and dry winter weather leaves your skin dry and tight. The decrease in circulation and perspiration and the skin’s ability to turn over the outer layer has slowed down result in decrease in suppleness and the skin feels rough. Spring is then the ideal time to correct the damages and prepare the skin for the warm season.

Summer brings heat, UV Ray and Sun. This leads to perspiration. The sweat in the body when mixed with dirt from the environment can clog the pores. This causes breakouts and acne. Furthermore when exposed to sun burn, chemicals from the pool, the seawater and other harmful effects, the skin may sustain damage. Protection and cleansing become comparatively important. Cleanse the skin day and night and this will remove dirt from the skin during the day and sebum that accumulates during the night. This will prevent any breakouts and blackheads. Exfoliate weekly to remove any dead skin, to enhance the attractiveness and to prevent any clogged pores. Moisturize the skin to prevent it from being dry. Use a light moisturizer so as not to be excessively moisturized. Toning the skin will ensure all traces of dirt are cleansed. Always apply sunscreen and frequently during the day to protect the skin against damages caused by UV.

Seasonal variations throughout the year take a toll on the skin. By adopting an appropriate regimen and routine each season, the damages to the skin may be reduced. Moreover, the appropriate regimen will enhance the beauty of the skin and its attractiveness.
