The Different Types of Skin

Skin is the soft outer layer of the body. It is the largest organ consists of multiple layers. It guards the underlying muscles, bones, ligaments and internal organs. As the skin is in contact with the environment, it plays a key role in protecting our body against pathogens (germs) and excessive water loss. It also acts as an insulator and regulates our body temperature. Its other functions are sensation and synthesis of vitamin D. The skin also has an aesthetic appeal (physical state and attractiveness) and communicates our mood when in contact with other people.

The skin does not have a flat, smooth surface. Microscopically scrutinized, the skin is full of lumps, bumps, crevasses and holes. Because of this and since the skin serves several major functions, it is important to take good care of the skin to enable it to work in optimal level.

Having a professional skin care regimen is one way to take good care of the skin. To develop the right regimen with the right skin care products, you need to understand the type of skin you have.

The type of skin you have is determined by age, environment, live style, food and the activities you indulge in. Your skin also changes by the same factors and that includes seasonal variations, ie, it changes over time.

There are basically 5 different types of skin, categorize by the texture and the oil (sebum) or moisture level. They are normal, dry, oily, combination and sensitive.

Normal skin is healthy and firm. It is smooth with small pores. It has a clear complexion and does not develop spots and blemishes. Pimples rarely occur and the pores are small. It has an even tone and smooth. The pores are fine and barely visible. Normal skin when exposed to sunlight will burn and then tan.

Dry skin is caused by lack of natural oil. The skin looks dull and lifeless. It feels dry and stretch, especially after cleansing and may look flaky with small pores, blackheads and blemishes. It may also feel itchy and irritated. Without sufficient moisture, it may become chapped and more likely to become wrinkly. Without much natural lubrication, the skin may burn quickly.

Oily skin has too much oil and it looks shiny, sallow and coarse. The pores are large and the skin is prone to acne, blackheads and white heads. The skin will feel sticky. Within hours of cleansing the skin will feel oily again. Oily skin rarely burns when exposed to the sun and it usually tans easily.

Combination skin type is oily on the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) while other parts of the face, cheeks and around the eye are dry. Just like normal skin, combination skin will sunburn when expose to sunlight and then turn to tan.

Sensitive skin is more of a skin condition than a skin type. The skin can be normal, dry, oily or combination. Sensitive skin is delicate in that it is more prone to irritation as in stinging, chafing and even itching. Since it is the most fragile skin type, special care has to be taken. Because of its sensitivity the skin burns easily and may experience rashes or burning sensation due to exposure to wind, sun and shifts in temperature.   

These are then the different types of skin. Based on the various characteristics and needs of each type, formulae are created and products are then developed. Knowing the type of skin, you will be able to develop a skin care regimen with the appropriate products. The aim is to attain a balanced, revitalized skin condition while protecting your skin against the harmful effects of the environment.
